Stem head fittings

1/4" x 3/32" brass strips are formed around the bowsprit and keel. Hollow brass tube is used to rivet them on.
The bowsprit has a short lenght on the other side acting as washers for the rivets. Cut this slightly long and only drill and radius one end. Drill and insert the two rivets. Fit the short strip and mark the second hold. Cut, drill and radius.

Deadeyes Jig

The chain plates were made from 1/4" x 3/32" brass strip folded square to go over the Bulwark rail. The deadeyes were attached using thin copper wire (ex telephone cable). A flat was filled on the bottom of the deadeye.
A jig was made to hold the brass strip and the deadeye in place while the wire was wrapped around twice then soldered.
A small groove was cut in the top of the Bulwark Rail to accept the soldered joint. 5mm mahogany strengtheners were fixed to the inside of the hull using Plastic Padding (polyester resin paste).

The chain plate brass strip was riveted to the hull using 3/32" (1.6mm) brass tube. The outer end was belled out using a ball pein hammer. The inner end was bent over and Plastic padding added to lock the rivet in place.
Bowsprit shroud attachment eye bolts were added using the same method before the deck was finnaly added.

Making Deadeyes

Thin linen thread is used to whip the 1.8mm polyester braided cord. The bulldog clip comes from an electrical lead used in electronics.
A reef knot is tied 10mm from the deadeye and the short end held on the deadeye. The free end is tightly looped about 7 - 10 times. The short end is cut off after about 5 turns. To finish the whipping, the thread is passed through the loop to form a half hitch which is sealed with a drop of Loctite super glue. Another drop is used on the reef knot and free end of the braide cord. Excess is cut off.
This method is used to make up all rope ends. It is quick after practice.
 
 

Pin Rail

The main pin rail is made from 8mm square walnut. It was notched to fit on the bulwark posts to take account of the hulls curvature. The two ends were pinned to the posts for strength (drill in situ at an angle). Add all fittings before attaching the pin rail to the posts.
The eyebolts were soldered to brass tube which was passed through the rail and then riveted over.
Drill the vertical holes away from the posts (not on the centre line) to allow the belaying pins to be fitted. This also gives more room when tying on the lines. The bulwark rail can obstruct the removal of the belaying pins.

The wire is stripped from telephone cable, it is already tinned.
Single/Double Block A piece of wood is used to get the square bend. The block is inserted. The two ends are twisted twice then wrapped once around a 2mm drill in different directions. The end is soldered forming the eye. The rope hole should be next to the eye to simulate it passing over the pulley.
Hook/Eye The eye is formed first by wrapping the wire twice around the 2mm drill. A piece of wood is used to form a square bend. The block is inserted with the hole next to the hook. The wires are twisted for their length then formed into a hook. excess is cut off. Both ends are soldered.

Ratlines

Thin linen thread (0.6mm) was knotted to the shrouds and fixed with a drop of super glue. A paper template was made to get even spacing of 30mm (equivalent to 2ft = 600mm)


Nav Lights

The nav light boxes were attached to the main shrouds using pin rails.
Wedges of different thicknesses were glued to the back of the boxes to align them vertically and parallel to the fore/aft line. The pin rail was notched to take the shrouds, placed the other side of the shrouds and then glued to the wedges. The front shroud was tied on.
The pin rails are used to hang the ropes on.
